Voice Lessons
Discover YOUR voice
Inside every singer is their true voice—the best, most complete sound they can produce. My role is to guide you in finding that sound. Through curious exploration, increasing physical awareness, and clarifying intentions, you can discover a way of singing that is expressive, deliberate, and free. I make it a point to address the most pressing technical concerns while honoring each student’s goals and repertoire interests.
“I am no longer having trouble with the higher sections of the alto parts and now sing them with confidence.”
—Marion S.
“In eight months of studying with Teri Kowiak, I have learned more than in eight years of lessons with other teachers about the anatomy of the voice and the amazing collaboration of mind, body and musical sense that goes into singing.”
—Helen S.
Get the guidance you need to thrive
As your guide, I want to help you love your own voice, not the voice you wish you had, think you should have, or the voice someone else wants you to have. I provide a safe space to explore complex thoughts and feelings about your voice. I offer anecdotes from my own experience—and a bit of levity when necessary—to guide my students through challenges I have faced to help them find their best solution. I love seeing the look of surprise and joy on a student’s face when they take a risk and find out what they are capable of.
“Thanks to her skillful instruction, encouragement and unflagging patience, I have had the joy of rediscovering my voice and the pleasure of singing–something I thought I’d lost when I turned sixty.”
—Helen S.
Sing your story
Singers are drawn to certain songs and stories because these works echo something they already feel inside themselves. I help my students look inward to find their personal connection to a text or story. When they find it, something magical happens: the song transcends its original intent, and the performance can tell multiple stories at the same time. The singer can now connect to the audience’s own stories and experiences through the song.
“I am very excited about my progress as a singer since I started studying with Teri. Now we are tackling repertoire that I thought was out of my reach. I am having a lot of fun singing with her expert teaching and coaching!”
—Staffan E.
Gain confidence through excellence
Singers often come to me because they are facing an issue that is keeping them from singing the songs they love.
Common Issues include
Pitch instability
Running out of air too early
Fatiguing quickly
Worry about a “thin” sound
Reaching high or low notes
Mysterious body soreness after singing
We address these through:
Reducing jaw and tongue tension
Breath management
Finding proper placement of the sound
Expanding resonant space
Management of changing registers
Coordinating the timing of the details of vocal production
By gaining understanding of your unique vocal instrument, you can develop technical ability, musicality, and confidence that will lead to a lifetime of healthy and enjoyable singing.
